The Symbol of the Rebel Alliance - By: swmand4

The Rebel Alliance, or as it was officially known the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and more commonly known as simply the Alliance, or the Rebellion, was a movement formed by Bail Organa and Mon Mothma to oppose the rule of the Galactic Empire. Before the Alliance came to be, another less organized rebel movement secrlety led by Bail stood against the Empire existed. This early group came together from a series of cells and small rebel movements, such as planetary resistance movements, and even the Separatist holdouts. The Alliance and the rebel cells before it were born from the overall discontent within the Empire who wished the Galactic Republic to be restored whose efforts were led by renegade members in the Senate such as Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and later, his daughter Leia Organa and made up from the citizens of the Empire and Imperial defectors from their Military. Founded and united by Organa, the rebels were assisted by several surviving members of the Jedi Order, such as Ahsoka TanoKanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, and later in the war the Luke Skywalker. Clone Wars veterans such as some of the Clone Troopers also assisted in the initial movement. By the time of the start of the Galactic Civil War, the Rebel Alliance had chosen a red starbird as its symbol and logo. As opposed to waging all-out war, the Rebel Alliance waged a war of attrition against the Galactic Empire, establishing bases across the galaxy instead of controlling an entire planet.

The rebellion's war with the Galactic Empire initially went poorly before rebel agents managed to successfully steal the plans for the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star. From there the rebellion was ultimately able to analyze the plans and discover the Death Star's weakness, at which point they mounted an attack on the Death Star. To their fortune, the rebellion was able to destroy the Death Star, shifting the tide of the war and bringing renewed hopes with victory at last beings seen as a possibility, proving to be a severe thorn in the Galactic Empire's side as they continued to engage in battles against oppression. However while under the leadership of Darth Vader, the Empire would strike back, and the rebellion was forced to constantly move from one base to another in order to avoid the Empire's wrath. One example of the Empire's wrath was when Vader's forces defeated the rebels and forced them to scatter their forces. Eventually, the Alliance prevailed against the Empire and critically damaged it when they launched an attack against the second Death Star during its construction. Not only were they able to destroy the station, but the Empire was crippled when Luke Skywalker managed to redeem Darth Vader who killed the Emperor, Darth Sidious, before dying himself in the battle. The rebels was soon reorganized into the fledgling New Republic which would defeat the Empire at the Battle of Jakku, and force the Empire to surrender by signing the Galactic Concordance, effectively ending the Galactic Civil War.

Alliance High Command[]

Alliance High Command, also called Alliance CommandRebel CommandRebel Alliance High CommandRebel Council or the Alliance Council, was the leadership council in charge of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. It was led by the Chancellor Mon Mothma and also included General Jan Dodonna, the Senators of Alderaan Bail Organa and Leia Organa, General Crix Madine, and Admiral Gial Ackbar. Soldiers of the rebellion complained that the Alliance Command attempted to manage the Rebel Alliance as a government, and not a military resistance. In the early days of the rebellion against the Galactic Empire, various rebel cells began coordinating their efforts to combat the Empire. Rebel Command was established and included Senator Bail Organa and Commander Jun Sato. After the Rebel Alliance was formed, the Alliance Command based themselves on Dantooine before they transferred operations to a new headquarters inside the ruins of the Great Temple on Yavin 4. Four years after the start of the Galactic Civil War, the Alliance High Command had transferred their headquarters to Gial Ackbar's flagship Home One. With the Empire's defeat at the Battle of Endor, the rebels reorganized into the New Republic. Alliance High Command accordingly transitioned into Republic Command.

Alliance Civil Government[]

The Alliance Civil Government functioned as the political leadership of the Alliance, alongside the military that acted as the paramilitary force of the Rebel Alliance. The Civil Government was formed around the ideals of a democracy, with its goal to restore the old Galactic Republic that was supplanted by the Galactic Empire, and bring about a true democratic Galactic Senate once more. At the head of the Civil Government was its Chief of State, Chancellor Mon Mothma. Under her leadership was the Alliance Cabinet, representing military and civilian representatives. The cabinet, with a total of six individuals, represented diverse points of view in order to encourage debate and disagreement in a democratic form of government. The members of the Alliance Cabinet each had different responsibilities in Alliance affairs. Senator Nower Jebel of Uyterserved as the Alliance Minister of Finance. Vasp Vaspar, senator of the Taldot sector, was the Minister of Industry. Senator Tynnra Pamlo of Taris served as Minister of Education. Bail Organa, former senator of Alderaan, also served in the Alliance Cabinet, and he was one of the earliest initiators of rebellion as well as an early organizer of direct resistance against the Empire. These goals were achieved with the rise of the New Republic and a new Galactic Senate.

Alliance Cabinet[]

The Alliance Cabinet, also referred to as the Cabinet, was a branch of the Alliance to Restore the Republic's Alliance Civil Government. Arranged beneath the Alliance's titular Chief of State Mon Mothma, the Alliance Cabinet was made up of six allied ministers with specific portfolios, including such portfolios as finance, industry, and education. Members of the Cabinet were responsible for converting Chief of State Mon Mothma's policy decisions into realized action items. Its membership included the Minister of Finance, Minister of Education, Minister of State, Minister of Industry, Minister of Supply, and the Ministry of War. The multiple meetings of the Alliance Cabinet were organized and chaired with them whenever Mon Mothma was unavailable to attend one of the meetings. The secretary also trained security-cleared for assignment to the ministries. Every Alliance Ministry was lean and efficient, with the personal staffs of the Ministers of the Alliance usually numbering under fifty beings, spread among secretaries, assistants, coordinators and functionaries.

Alliance Fleet[]

The Alliance Fleet, also known as the Rebel fleet, the Rebel Alliance Navy, the Rebel Navy, or simply called Rebel Alliance Fleet, was the naval force of the Alliance to Restore the Republic in the Galactic Civil War. It was formed from starships of various rebel cells. In the early days of the rebel movement against the Galactic Empire, various rebel cells began coordinating their efforts to combat the reign of the Empire. A rebel fleet was beginning to form. The fleet of the Alliance was originally quite small, composed of small to mid sized cruisers, converted freighters, and some of the old outdated starfighters. In terms of organization, the fleet of rebels was scattered and under various command structures. Following the Empire's failed attempt to capture Senator Mon Mothma, starships from the various rebel cells assembled at Dantooine to become the Rebel Alliance's fleet to fight the Empire. As the Galactic Civil War wore on, the ragtag fleet began to grow, as disaffected Imperials switched sides and numerous planets declared their support for the rebellion. When the Mon Calamari chose to join the Rebel Alliance, they brought with them their Star Cruisers, giving the Alliance the firepower needed to contend with the Imperial warships. Following the rebellion's victory at the Battle of Endor and the formation of the New Republic, the fleet of the Rebel Alliance Fleet was reorganized into the New Republic Starfleet.

Fleet Command[]

Fleet Command was the command section of the Alliance Fleet. Around the time of Operation Fracture in the year of the Battle of Yavin, Colonel Anj Zavor was part of Fleet Command, working as the Yavin 4 liaison to Raddus. Sometime after the Battle of Endor, Lieutenant Shara Bey flew in a patrol screening the fleet for three days. The Alliance Fleet and its activities were overseen by Alliance High Command, who managed the logistical and strategic matters of the rebels efforts against the dominant Galactic Empire, with Gial Ackbar serving as the Admiral of the Fleet. As a volunteer force, recruits could come and go as they pleased without reporting to superiors. Such practice, however, was frowned upon, while members would stay with the fleet owing to a sense of camaraderie and impracticality of returning to their home systems, which were often under Imperial control. With the fleet constantly moving, it could take weeks for a separated rebel pilot to rejoin their squadron, owing in part to the scatter protocol for rebellion pilots, which established a practice of randomly choosing a path to various worlds throughout hyperspace in order to lose any possible Imperial pursuit.

Alliance Intelligence[]

Alliance Intelligence also known as Rebel Intelligence or Rebel Alliance Intelligence was a branch of the Alliance to Restore the Republic responsible for obtaining and analyzing military, diplomatic and economic intel about the Galactic Empire and reporting such information to the relevant branches of the rebellion. By the Galactic Civil War, General Airen Cracken was the Chief of Rebel Intelligence, and he still held the title at the time of the Battle of Endor. In the first years of the Imperial Era, Alliance Intelligence was formed during the early days of the rebels movement against the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano took over command of Intelligence after she was recruited into the Alliance. Through the organization's many operatives, analysts and personnel, information was transmitted to senior Intelligence officers, who presented the Chief with daily briefs on the most crucial topics. The Chief in turn reported to Commander-in-Chief, and advised them in their strategic planning. Some of the missions that were performed by Alliance intelligence were similar in nature to those of rebels special forces. The special forces, however, tended to be cocky, energetic and not necessarily best suited to operations that required patience and discipline. Indeed special forces missions groups were often sent to worlds to draw attention away from existing Rebel Intelligence agents who's cover was endangered.

Fulcrum Operatives[]

Fulcrum was a title used by several rebel informants in the years leading up to the Battle of Yavin. Former Padawan of the old Jedi Order Ahsoka Tano proposed the idea, and was the most notable of the Fulcrum agents. Imperial Security Bureau Agent Alexsandr Kallus became another Fulcrum after he became disillusioned with the Galactic Empire, and informed the rebellion that several Imperial cadets at the elite Skystrike Academy wanted to defect to the rebels. The Captain Cassian Andor of the Alliance to Restore the Republic was a Fulcrum recruitment agent in the Albarrio Sector. After the establishment of the Galactic Empire, Order 66 survivor Ahsoka Tano took over Bail Organa's intel network, which was part of the early rebel network. She adopted the codename Fulcrum, which later became an alias for other rebel operatives within the network. By a point ten years after the rise of the Empire, Ahsoka and other Fulcrum agents were using a symbol derived from her forehead markings. Although Tano was presumed dead after her duel with Darth Vader on the planet Malachor, the alias Fulcrum lived on and was still used by several other rebel spies and operatives.

Alliance Special Forces[]

Alliance Special Forces, also known as Rebel Alliance Special ForcesRebel Alliance SpecForces, or simply as SpecForce, were a special military branch of the Alliance to Restore the Republic that were attached to Alliance High Command and led by General Crix Madine. Known to be a cocky and arrogant in general, SpecForce often took the rebellion more seriously than most ground troops, and disdained on those who shirked from duty. All the SpecForce personnel were required to pass the training which consisted of four months of intense, physical and mental training, including learning to use antique slugthrowers, disarming proximity mines and rappelling off a ray shield. Specifically selected for high skill, morale, bravery, and dedication to the rebel cause, SpecForce soldiers were often either from subjugated worlds, or were Imperials disillusioned by the government's tyranny. Rebel forces often tended to be a bit more individualistic and ragtag than the forces of the Imperial Military. Very few of the regular soldiers were capable of becoming SpecForce troopers, and all volunteered for service. SpecForce was organized into formal units much like its Imperial counterparts: divisions, regiments, companies, platoons, squads, and fire teams. As was mentioned, the regiments were consistently numbered within each division, with the number indicating the type of specialist they had.

Rebel Marines[]

Rebel Marines, also known as the Alliance Fleet Troopers were a class of soldiers within the Alliance to Restore the Republic that fought in the Galactic Civil War against the Galactic Empire. A contingent of Rebel Marines took part in the attack on the Imperial security complex on the Outer Rim world of Scarif, clad in camouflage befitting the world's environment. They were stationed aboard Alliance Fleet starships for ship board defense and boarding. The marines divided into Alliance Fleet regiments in the Alliance Military. Some of the Rebel Marines were stationed on Tantive IV at the time of the dawn of the Galactic Civil War. One of the regiments of the Alliance Special Forces were a class of Rebel Marines. The Alliance Fleet Troopers were later reformed after the victory at the Battle of Endor into the New Republic Marines. Rebel Alliance Fleet Troopers were armed with a variety of weapons, including blaster rifles, rocket launchers, and thermal detonators. However, those of the Alliance Fleet Troopers who were aboard the Tantive IV had only blaster pistols. Comprised of tough, hardened soldiers, the Marines were specially trained to fight in several environments.

Rogue One[]

Rogue One was the improvised callsign used by the squad of rebel soldiers and recruits that participated in a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, a moon-sized battle station constructed by the Galactic Empire. Though the squad succeeded in its mission, none of the team survived; those who didn't die in battleduring their attempt to steal the plans perished when the Empire destroyed the Imperial base on Scarif with the Death Star's superlaser. Because of the efforts of Rogue One, the Death Star plans would eventually make it into the hands of the Rebel Alliance. This intel would later provide the means in destroying the Imperial battle station. This group started when Captain Cassian Andor along with reprogrammed Imperial Security Droid K-2SO were tasked with taking Jyn Erso, the daughter of Galen Erso, to Jedha in order to get information from Saw Gerrera. In the duration of their journey, they encountered the Guardians of the Whills members Baze Malbus and Chirrut Îmwe along with former Imperial pilot and defector Bodhi Rook, all of whom became critical members of Rogue One along with various other soldiers who volunteered to make a difference in the galaxy.

Pathfinders[]

The Pathfinders, also known as SpecForce Pathfinders or the Rebel Pathfinders was a rebel special forces unit in the service of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. General Han Solo used the Pathfinders as his elite strike team during the Battle of Endor, as well as a raid at the Wretch of Tayron. Pathfinders were special commandos who were trained in infiltration. They used guerilla tactics to infiltrate areas they were trying to capture or liberate. Although members of the SpecForces hailed from a vast array of planets, many of them came from Outer Rim planets subjugated by the Empire. Contrary to their Imperial foes, the rebel commandos did not benefit from Academy training. Nevertheless, they were trained by former Imperials like their leader, General Crix Madine. Although members of the SpecForces hailed from a vast array of planets, many of them came from Outer Rim worlds subjugated by the Empire. Contrary to the Imperials, the commandos did not benefit from Academy training. Nevertheless, trained by Ex-Imperials like their leader, General Crix Madine. Notable Pathfinders were Sergeant Kes Dameron, Chewbacca, Elwood Gor, Tuck, Sakas, and Nik Sant.

Extraction Team Bravo[]

Extraction Team Bravo, also referred to as Bravo Team, was a military unit that served the Alliance to Restore the Republic under the command of General Davits Draven during the lead-up to the Galactic Civil War. Near the dawn of the Galactic Civil War, the extraction team was sent on a mission to break out Jyn Erso a Human female criminal who would later become a key figure in the theft of the plans to the Death Star from a labor camp that used by the Empire Empire on the planet Wobani. After a successful extraction on the planet's surface, the U-Wing of the elite unit, Bravo One, encountered a minor technical setback and was not able to jump to hyperspace. This special forces team took refuge in an asteroid field in the system of Wobani and a priority transmission to all available rebel vessels was sent by the KX-Series Security Droid who formerly served in the Imperial Military of the Galactic Empire, K-2SO. A rebel X-Wing starfighter squadron that was designated the Red Flight group and served in the Alliance Starfighter Corps near the time of the Liberation of the Erso answered their call and saved them from incoming forces of the Galactic Empire.

Alliance Starfighter Corps[]

Alliance Star

X-Wing Fighters of the Rebel Alliance Starfighter Corps

The Rebel Alliance Starfighter Corps also known as the Alliance Starfighter Corps or the Starfighter Corps was a starfighter unit of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. A unit made of rebel pilots, they participated in many major battles such as the Battle of Yavin, the Battle of Hoth and the Battle of Endor during the Galactic Civil War. It was one of the Alliance's greatest assets. Although a small, unorganized resistance against the Imperial rule of the galaxy had existed since the dawn of the Empire, the Starfighter Corps itself was not organized until two years before the Battle of Yavin. By this time, the Starfighter Corps had access to BTL-A4 Y-Wing assault starfighter/bombers, T-65B X-Wing starfighters, T-65C-A2 X-Wings, and UT-60D U-Wing starfighter/support crafts. After the Battle of Yavin, the Alliance Starfighter Corps dramatically increased the size and diversity of its forces. Within a year, the Rebel Alliance had also acquired T-47 Airspeeders, which would see action at the Battle of Vrogas Vas with Cyan Squadron. Three years into the Galactic Civil War, the T-47s would famously prove their worth at the desperate Battle of Hoth. Four years into the war, the Starfighter Corps struck a decisive blow to the Empire in the pivotal Battle of Endor. After the Declaration of a New Republic later in the same year, the rebels Starfighter Corps was reorganized into the New Republic Starfighter Corps.

Starfighter Command[]

Alliance Starfighter Command, sometimes known as Fighter Command, was a branch in the rebellion's military that was in command of the the Alliance Starfighter Corps and was responsible for handling Alliance to Restore the Republic fighter squadrons assigned to their bases, ships and fleets assigned to both the Alliance Forces and individual Sector Forces. Even though Starfighter Command was commanded by General Antoc Merrick, he deferred to Colonel Bandwin Cor for the day-to-day decisions. Training of pilots fell under Starfighter Command's authority, as did direct command of "rogue" starfighter wings deployed with Alliance Forces. Starfighter Command had the option of filing complaints if they felt some starfighters assigned to a Sector were being used inefficiently and ineffectively. A large scale Alliance mission requiring multiple starfighter wings such as operations mounted against Imperial fleets and Imperial bases did few times require the use of more wings and squadrons than the Starfighter Command had available. In these certain situations, Starfighter Command requests a loan of assigned starfighter units back to the Alliance for the duration of the mission.

Starfighter Personnel[]

==== Rebel Fighter Pilots ==== wedge Rebel Pilots, also known as Rebel Fighter Pilots were pilots who served both the early rebellion and later the Rebel Alliance under the Alliance's Starfighter Corps. They fought in many battles against the Imperial forces during the lead up to and during the Galactic Civil War. There were nearly as many stories as there were dedicated and resolved pilots: rebel starfighters were flown by Imperial defectors, reformed mercenaries, adventure-seeking farmboys, and daredevils who only truly felt alive in a cockpit. Regardless of their backgrounds, pilots learned to work together, relying on their wingmen as well as their training in countless battles against the Empire. Training fell under the auspices of Starfighter Command. Veteran pilots flew with rookies to hone their skills. Rebel pilots wore orange, gray, green or red flight suits. They wore a flak vest with a life support box on top. They each also wore a flight helmet which included a visor with a special computer projection for targeting. The helmets were usually decorated with the symbol of the Rebel Alliance, though some pilots customized them to include symbols of personal significance or emblems of specific squadrons.

Starfighter Squadrons[]

Red Squadron[]

Red Squadron, also called the Red Group, was a squadron of X-Wing starfighters that served as part of the Starfighter Corps during the Galactic Civil War. The Red Squadron took part in the Battle of Scarif alongside Blue Squadron, Green Squadron, and Gold Squadron under Garven Dreis' command. The X-Wings assisted in engaging Imperial ships above the planet, combating TIE fighters and Star Destroyers with the rest of the Alliance Fleet. During the battle, Pedrin Gaul, flying as Red Five, was killed. Red Squadron soon after took part in the Battle of Yavin with X-Wings from Red Squadron making the second and third attack run on the Death Star's exhaust port. Luke Skywalker, flying as Red Five, scored a critical hit during the third attack run, destroying the Death Star. After the battle, the Alliance decided to evacuate their base on Yavin 4. Red Squadron participated in the Battle of Endor under the command of Wedge Antilles. The squadron was composed of a mix of starfighters, including A-Wings, X-Wings, and Y-Wings. Following the victory at Endor for the rebellion and the reformation of the Republic, Red Squadron was assimilated into the New Republic Starfighter Corps.

Blue Squadron[]

Blue Squadron was a squadron that served as part of the Starfighter Corps of the Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. Blue Squadron, under General Antoc Merrick (Blue Leader), fought in the Battle of Scarif with the Red Squadron, Green Squadron, and Gold Squadron. It was a mix of X-Wings, assigned to escort UT-60D U-Wings into combat zones and, a small number of Y-Wings reallocated from squadrons in neighboring sectors. Blue Squadron X-Wings joined the rest of the Alliance Fleet to the aid of Rogue One on Scarif below. Most, if not all, of the Blue Squadron craft were destroyed at Scarif. Blue Squadron decimation at Scarif and the loss of the Blue Leader meant that the Blue Squadron would not be present at the following climactic battle at Yavin, leaving the Red and Gold Squadrons to take on that engagement. Blue Squadron was also part of the force stationed at the Echo Base when the Galactic Empire discovered the hidden base, launching an invasion that signaled the commencement of the Battle of Hoth. Blue Squadron participated in the Battle of Endor, during which time Ten Numb, a male Sullustan pilot, flew a B-Wing starfighter under the callsign (Blue Five).

Gold Squadron[]

Gold Squadron, also referred to as Gold Group, was a squadron that began as a rebel cell fighting against the Galactic Empire, part of the unit led by General Jan Dodonna, which itself was part of Senator Bail Organa's larger rebellion. The squadron was commanded by Captain Jon "Dutch" Vander and flew BTL-A4 Y-Wing light bombers. After the formation of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, Gold Squadron served as part of the Rebel Alliance Starfighter Corps. The unit participated in the battle over Scarif, a fierce engagement that signaled the start of the Galactic Civil War. Shortly after the Battle of Scarif, the squadron, including its leader, Jon Vander, was nearly completely wiped out by Darth Vader and elite TIE pilots in the action over Yavin. This battle, a direct result of information gained from agents on Scarif, resulted in the destruction of the Death Star. Later in the war, a reformed Gold Squadron took part in the Battle of Endor under the command of Lando Calrissian, where it participated in the run against Death Star II'sreactor. Following the victory of the rebels and the declaration of a New Republic, Gold Squadron was assimilated into the New Republic Starfighter Corps.

Gray Squadron[]

Gray Squadron was a starfighter squadron that was known to fly B-Wing and Y-Wing fighters marked with gray striping to identify their squad affiliation within the Rebel Alliance's Starfighter Corps. The Y-Wing fighters in the squadron were flown in three flights of four. During the Galactic Civil War, the Gray Squadron participated in many of the battles in the war, particularly the Battle of Vrogas Vas and the Battle of Endor. The squadron was commanded by Horton Salm (Gray Leader) and included such pilots as the Lieutenant Ekelarc Yong (Gray Three) and the Lieutenant Telsij (Gray Two). The Gray Squadron was created prior to the Battle of Vrogas Vas, and the squadron proved vital in an attack on the Carida Imperial Academy, and in the battles of Kothlis and Endor. In the the Battle of Endor, Gray Squadron skimmed the Death Star's surface to provide defensive cover, as well as destroying ships between Millennium Falcon and the Death Star.

Tierfon Yellow Aces[]

The Tierfon Yellow Aces were a starfighter squadron in the Alliance to Restore the Republic. It was based at the Tierfon launch base, many of its pilots, such as Lieutenant Zal Dinnes, Jek Tono Porkins, and Captain Dosmit Ræh flew T-65B X-Wing starfighters. Eventually, encroaching Imperial patrols necessitated the scuttling of the base and the break-up of the squadron, with its members being reallocated to other outposts; the four rebel pilots Dinnes, Porkins, Vangos Grek, and Robich Duggsin would be sent to Base One on Yavin 4. However, former members of the squadron would retain its insignia on their flight helmets well into their service with other flight groups. Sometime in the years of the Galactic Civil War, the squadron was resurrected for service in the New Republic Starfighter Corps. Tierfon Yellow Aces saw action at the Battle of Jakku, during which a pair of Y-Wings fighters engaged a stolen Imperial shuttle piloted by Norra Wexley.

Blade Squadron[]

Blade Squadron was a starfighter squadron that utilized B-Wing Starfighters in the Rebel Alliance's Starfighter Corps and later the New Republic's Starfighter Corps during the Galactic Civil War. The squadron fought during the Battle of Endor, where they single-handedly destroyed the Imperial-Class Star Destroyer Devastator. The squadron's patch, a B-Wing over a lightning bolt, was captioned with the words "strike as lightning" in Aurebesh. Five years after the start of the war, Blade Squadron also saw action at the Battle of Malastare, during which Gina Moonsong disobeyed the Blade Leader Braylen Stramm's orders and attacked Moff Pandion's vacation palace on the planet. Later, a group of X-Wing starfighters was added to escort Gray Squadron's B-Wings in the Battle for Kuat Drive Yards and the Battle of Jakku.

Green Squadron[]

Green Squadron, also referred to as Green Group, was a squadron that served as part of the Alliance's Starfighter Corps during the Galactic Civil War. Green Squadron flew in many notable battles including the Battle of Atollon, the Battle of Scarif, and the Battle of Yavin. During the Battle of Endor, Green Squadron was entirely composed of the A-Wing fighters and was led by Commander Arvel Crynyd (Green Leader). During the battle, Green Squadron assembled to attack the Super Star Destroyer Executor. When Crynyd sacrificed himself to destroy the Executor, command of the group fell to acting commander Lieutenant L'ulo L'ampar (Green Two). After the deactivation of the shield on the forest moon below, Green Squadron, along with Yellow Squadron, were tasked with screening Lando Calrissian's attack run on the surface of the battlestation, and subsequently watching for starships that were evacuating from Death Star II. One such craft was a  Lambda-Class shuttle, flown by Luke SkywalkerShara Bey (Green Four) intercepted Skywalker almost immediately, but Skywalker identified himself as a friendly as Bey was preparing to lock on to the Imperial ship.

Rogue Squadron[]

Rogue Squadron, also called Rogue Group, was a squadron that flew craft such as the T-47 Airspeeders, the T-65B X-Wing starfighters, and sometimes the BTL-A4 Y-Wing assault starfighter/bombers, when heavy ordnance was required. In the aftermath of the Battle of Yavin, only the two pilots Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles of Red Squadron survived the battle, with Skywalker destroying the Death Star and winning the day. After the battle, Antilles became a respected veteran of the Alliance's Rogue Squadron; another distinguished pilot in the squadron was Derek "Hobbie" Klivian. The rebels later established Echo Base on the icy world of Hoth, and a number of rebel pilots flew snowspeeders in Rogue Squadron. Echo Base was soon after discovered by an Imperial probe droid, and the Rogues were tasked with delaying an Imperial ground assault while rebel ships fled. Skywalker flew as Rogue Leader in the Battle of Hoth against AT-ATs, with Dak Ralter serving as his gunner and Hobbie flying as their wingman. Other members included Zev Senesca as well as Wes Janson as a pilot-gunner. The tactic proved successful, as a number of Alliance transports were able to escape.

Corona Squadron[]

Corona Squadron was a squadron that served the Alliance to Restore the Republic and later the New Republic. This squadron flew X-Wing starfighters. During the early years of the Galactic Civil War, the members of Corona Squadron included the Contessa (Corona Leader), Yendor (Corona Two), Smikes (Corona Three), Thane Kyrell (Corona Four), and Kendy Idele (Corona Five). Corona Squadron was a ragtag group that came together from across the galaxy with vastly different backgrounds. Corona was stationed on Hoth when the Empire discovered the rebel base there. After the Battle of Hoth, they were personally thanked for their service by Mon Mothma, the leader of the Alliance. She then gave them a special assignment of doing reconnaissance for the Alliance in which they were to be based on the Liberty. After the discovery of the Second Death Star, Corona Squadron was assigned to cover the starfighters of the Gold, Red, Green, and Gray squadrons, as they penetrated the Death Star II. Corona went on to serve the New Republic after Endor, with the membership shifting with Yendor being made leader after Contessa left, and two new members being introduced.

Alliance Cells[]

The early rebellion was a movement made up of a loose network of rebel cells that operated across the galaxy with the goal of opposing the rule of the Galactic Empire and bringing it down, thus returning galactic freedom and peace. Rebel cells and militia were spread across the galaxy on their own initiative, however they all had been coordinated as part of a larger movement in secret by individuals such as Senator Bail Organa and former Padawan of the Jedi Order, Ahsoka Tano. It was formed some time after the end of the Clone Wars, in which Chancellor Palpatine of the Galactic Republic declared himself Emperor and transformed the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire. Under the rebel leadership, multiple cells were founded and secretly worked to feed them missions to undertake against the Galactic Empire while maintaining all cells' low contact between them in order to avoid Imperial crackdown. As the rebels grew in numbers and influence, Senator Mon Mothma felt she could no longer keep the Empire at bay in the Imperial Senate. After Mon resigned from the Senate and openly opposed the Emperor's rule, she fled Chandrila and sought to unite the rebel cells across the galaxy in a formal Rebel Alliance with the purpose of restoring the Galactic Republic. After escaping pursuit, Mothma sent out a call to all cells to meet at Dantooine to unite against the Empire, from there the Alliance was born.

Phoenix Rebel Cell[]

The Phoenix Rebel Cell was a fleet of resistance fighters that fought against the Galactic Empire in the years prior to the Battle of Yavin. The cell, part of a network of rebel collectives, was led by Commander Jun Sato. It had five CR90 corvettes in its fleet, as well as the Pelta-class frigate Phoenix Home until it was destroyed. The fleet was also defended by Phoenix Squadron, a group of RZ-1 A-wing interceptors and later a lone Prototype B6. The cell forged an alliance with the rebels of Lothal after assisting the Lothal cell in the rescue of their leader, Kanan Jarrus.

Ghost Crew[]

The Spectres, also known as the Ghost Team and Ghost Crew, were a cell of resistance fighters who primarily operated on the Outer Rim planet Lothal before the Galactic Civil War. The rebels, who operated against the rule of the Galactic Empire, were headquartered in their ship, the Ghost, and also carried out operations on other nearby worlds. Each member of the rebellion had lost something to the Imperial regime and fought back in the hopes of someday liberating the galaxy from the Empire's rule. The rebels were part of a larger, disconnected rebel movement led by Senator Bail Organa and Ahsoka Tano.

This movement would eventually give rise to the Rebel Alliance. Eventually the Spectres cell was merged with the larger Phoenix Rebel Cell. The rebels were led by Kanan Jarrus, a Jedi survivor of Order 66. The other rebels were Hera Syndulla, the owner and pilot of the Ghost; Lothal orphan-turned-Jedi apprentice Ezra Bridger; the Mandalorian explosives expert Sabine WrenGarazeb Orrelios, the former captain of the Lasan High Honor Guard; and the astromech droid C1-10P, nicknamed "Chopper".

Phoenix Squadron[]

Phoenix Squadron was an elite star-fighter unit and part of a cell of resistance fighters who rebelled against the Galactic Empire in the years prior to the Battle of Yavin. The cell was led by Commander Jun Sato and was part of the wider rebel network. Phoenix Squadron piloted A-Wing starfighters and were carried aboard Sato's command ship Phoenix Home. The squadron could also be carried aboard the fleet's blockade runners using docking tubes. Following the destruction of Phoenix Home, the squadron lacked a permanent home and docked with the rest of the Phoenix fleet. After the rebels stole an Imperial fighter carrier from Ryloth, the squadron was housed on that starship.

Iron Squadron[]

Iron Squadron was a squadron that used a YT-2400 light freighter known as the Sato's Hammer  two years before the Battle of Yavin. The cell was led by Mart Mattin, who inherited the position from his father. During the Age of the Empire, they were an independent rebel cell that operated in the Mykapo system. Two years before the Battle of Yavin, Iron Squadron joined the rebellion after the Galactic Empire imposed martial law on Mykapo. Mart Mattin's crew included the female Theelin Gooti Terez, the Human male Jonner Jin, and the astromech droid R3-A3.

Massassi Rebel Cell[]

The Massassi group, also known as the Massassi unit was a rebel unit that was led by General Jan Dodonna. Initially formed as part of Senator Bail Organa's loosely-connected rebel network, it became one of the largest cells in the course of its fight against the Galactic Empire, based at the Great Temple of Massassi  on Yavin 4. With the consolidation of these groups into the Rebel Alliance, its base grew to be the Rebel Alliance's main hidden fortress and the unit was instrumental in the battles of Scarif and Yavin, the latter of which it was able to destroy the Death Star battle station.

Lothal Rebel Cell[]

A rebel cell was led by Ryder Azadi on the planet Lothal. Two years before the Battle of Yavin, Azadi's cell engaged in a campaign of sabotage at the Imperial Armory Complex, which manufactured vehicles for the Imperial Military. That same year, Azadi's cell joined forces with Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, and Chopper, who had been sent by the Phoenix Squadron, to collect intelligence about Grand Admiral Thrawn's new starfighter initiative. The cell member Morad Sumar was killed during the mission but his comrades managed to launch a diversionary attack on the factory's east gate which allowed Ezra's team to escape with the plans.

Partisans[]

The Partisans, also referred to as Saw Gerrera's militia, and Saw Gerrera's rebels, were a militant insurgent group and rebel cell who enacted armed campaigns against the Galactic Empire during the Age of the Empire. Led and founded by Saw Gerrera nineteen years before the Battle of Yavin, the Partisans played a part in destabilizing Gerrera's homeworld of Onderon from the Empire's occupying forces and eventually became allied with first the rebellion, and later, the  Rebel Alliance. However, some, like Alliance founders Mon Mothma and Bail Organa, distanced themselves from Gerrera's faction due to their willingness to resort to extreme tactics, such as torture and attacks on civilian targets. Shortly before the Battle of Yavin, the militia had very little communication with the mainstream Alliance, and Gerrera's militia besieged the holy moon of Jedha with the intentions of purging the Imperial occupation.

However, the campaign ended with the destruction of the Holy City by the Imperial Death Star battle station's superlaser, and the death of Saw Gerrera himself. Following the death of Gerrera, the remaining Partisans continued his extremist legacy to thwart the Empire at any cost. Some of the notable survivors from Jedha. The Partisans were also responsible for enough attacks resulting in civilian casualties that the Galactic Empire in response made a propaganda poster denouncing the Rebel Alliance as a terrorist group. The campaigns of the Partisans were later mentioned by New Republic Senator Ransolm Casterfo as an example of the Rebels' so-called terrorist tactics during the war, and also accused Leia Organa on whether she condoned it, with Leia simply saying he did what needed to be done without saying either way regarding her views on the matter.

Cavern Angels[]

The Cavern Angels were a squadron of X-Wing starfighters that were active on Jedha during the Galactic Civil War. Because of a shortage of spare parts, usually only one or two of the starfighters were operational at any given time. Two particular members of the Cavern Angels were the two male Tognath mercenary pilots Benthic and Edrio, the two of which sharing the nickname "Two Tubes" derived from the breathing apparatus that allowed their Tognath physiology to process oxygen atmospheres.

Free Ryloth Movement[]

The Free Ryloth Movement was a resistance movement led by Twi'lek Cham Syndulla during the reign of the Galactic Empire. The Free Ryloth movement sought to rid their home planet of Ryloth from Imperial occupation, fighting back against the Empire to do so. Later, the Free Ryloth movement joined forces with the Lothal rebels to remove a Quasar Fire-Class Cruiser carrier that was bombarding Ryloth. Eventually, the Free Ryloth movement attracted the attention of the Imperial strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn who studied Twi'lek culture, art, and philosophy and devised tactics that led to the fall of Tann province.

Mandalorian Protectors[]

The Journeyman Protectors were a group of lawmen who safeguarded the citizens of the Outer Rim world of Concord Dawn. Well respected for their service, the Journeyman Protectors' various constables each patrolled their local territory, and were considered representatives of the law, answerable to Concord Dawn's governor. By the time of the Galactic Empire's reign, the Journeyman Protectors wore armor similar to the style worn by Mandalorian soldiers of the era.

Some time after the fall of the Journeyman Protectors, the surviving members of the group along with several other clans who sought to uphold Mandalorian tradition and overthrow the Galactic Empire began calling themselves the Mandalorian Protectors, a name chosen because of their desire to protect not only the lives of Mandalore but the ways of her people. Beginning as a fledgling, covert resistance, by the time of the Galactic Civil War, the new Mandalorian Protectors had become a guerrilla fighting force against a growing Imperial occupation. Their numerical strength was nebulous, as their ranks were depleted by Imperial counterattacks, only to be bolstered with every Mandalorian they brought into their cause.

Separatist Holdouts []

The Separatist Holdouts were the surviving military and governing segments of the Confederacy of Independent Systems that had retreated from the newly formed Galactic Empire as the Clone Wars drew to an end. Members of Separatist Holdouts remained active in the fight against the Empire, which was lead by Darth Sidious, who orchestrated the reformation of the Republic into it as the Confederacy of Independent Systems began to retreat. After the deaths of the members of the Separatist Council, some Separatist-loyal worlds still refused to be absorbed into the new Galactic Empire. These remnants, some organized and unorganized, would continue to fight throughout the Imperial era. Many of them ended up joining the Rebel Alliance at its formation.

During the Age of the Empire, the tale of the Clone Wars was frequently used as a warning to the Galaxy of what could happen should the Empire and order fail. Separatist military equipment (including battle droids) that survived the war was used by a number of pirate and resistance organizations. A large amount of heavily modified Separatist equipment was used by the Rebel Alliance; examples including Battle Droids, and vehicles used by the Separatists during the war.
